Designer Focus: Haleh Nematzadeh

I was very privileged to get the chance to speak with the beautiful, fun, and sweet designer Haleh Nematzadeh. Her designs have been featured in ELLE, Nylon, WWD, and have been seen on many celebrities. The edgy and eclectic pieces are truly one-of-a-kind.

MFC: Haleh, can you give us a background on yourself and how you got started in fashion?

Haleh: I always loved clothes from a very young age and began taking design courses early on. I studied at FIT in New York, with a semester abroad in the UK. Officially, I started my collection in 2008 after working in the fashion industry.

MFC: What do you think attributed to your great deal of success?

Haleh: My love of fashion.

MFC: How does it feel having your pieces acknowledged, especially the celebrity following?

Haleh: It feels great to see women having fun and feeling it in the clothes. Dressing celebrity is great exposure, but I also love dressing women with an amazing sense of personal style.

MFC: Where do you get inspiration for your collections?

Haleh: It always varies, but usually through music. Also, the kind of style I’m seeing on the streets, and my personal story.

MFC: Describe your designs in 5 words.

Haleh: Bold, fun, personal, detailed, and crafted with love.

MFC: Any fun projects you’re working on?

Haleh: Yes! I am currently working on Dj mixes. Also, I have decided to blog live on my style journal/diary (click here).  I opened up my design studio, Haleh Nematzadeh Archive, for stylists to rent my wardrobe favorites - limited edition pieces are sold there.

MFC: Tell me more about the DJ’ing aspect of your life? I think it’s fantastic, is this a hobby?

Haleh: Thank you. I really love the way fashion and music bounce off each other, it came sort of effortlessly and I’m seeing where it’s taking me.

MFC: Your style is so eclectic and fun…who are your style icons and why?

Haleh: I have so many different ones! I always loved Edie Sedgwick, David Bowie, Isabella blow, stylist Katie grand, Kate lanphear, and Stevie nicks - it varies.

MFC: What’s a typical day in Haleh’s life?

Haleh: No two days are the same. Meditation, yoga, follow up on projects, and playing music at night.

MFC: My Fashion Cogitation readers would love to know where they can purchase your pieces.

Haleh: The pieces are usually limited edition and can be purchased on my website (click here). Pieces are also available at 25park.com and various rotating boutiques.

MFC: What advice would you give to any aspiring designers out there?

Haleh: Remain true to your visions and follow your strengths exclusively!

MFC: Last but not least…what does “Fashion” mean to you?

Haleh: Fashion to me is an expression of our current culture through garments, shoes, and accessories. Fashion is transient and always coming in and out of fashion.
